Have you been saving backup copies of your stats.dat file?

Did your Shockwave folder restore after you did your system restore?

What were you doing when you decided you needed to do a system restore? Downloading another unauthorized Ricochet game?

I appreciate the reminder to back up this important file. I just finished emailing a copy to myself. With Yahoo email, I can access this backup from any computer and restore to any computer on which I am running Ricochet (only one other so far).

Please quit acting so ignorant. Go to page 1 of this thread & READ how to save your stats.dat file. It's very simple -- even YOU can do it.

It kind of depends on what operating system he is using
Whether it is Windows XP -- which has no "AppData" folder
or
Windows 7/Vista --Which does have an "AppData" folder.

@Mhispider
If you're using Windows 7, check out my post about stats.dat right here

I'm using only Windows XP SP2. Not Windows 7. Windows XP has an Application Data folder. But it's hidden.

IMPORTANT message:
If you want to show/hide hidden files and folders, click Folder Options on the "Tools" menu and click 'View'
button on the top of the 'Folder Options' window and click 'Show hidden files and folders' or 'Do not show hidden files and folders'.

I have an old desktop computer running Windows XP, Service Pack 3. On that machine, the stats.dat file is under C:\Program Files\Ricochet Infinity. I don't believe this is a hidden folder. Regardless, it is quite easy to search for an individual file in XP. Even a computer engineer should be able to find this file.

I've removed Windows XP SP2 from my computer and I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 on my computer.

Have recently changed from an old XP computer to a new Windows 7.

Discovered that the latest stats.dat file (after playing the game) was first located at

C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Ricochet - Infinity\Stats.dat

and not in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Ricochet - Infinity\Stats.dat

However, since the latest period of a few days when the servers were down, the updated stats.dat are now stored in this latter place.

Strange...?

The lesson is that there may be several stats.dat files on your computer, and you must check the date/time when you back it up to make sure you save the latest.

BTW, what happened when the servers were down?

I NEVER used the stats.dat file for Backup & Transfer. Sometimes when I'm in the level editor my game crashes but it doesn't lose any ring data. :) Is it because I'm just too lucky?

Now this file has got me curious. Do I have to install the DAT extension to make this file work?

The stat.dat file is where the game stores your current score, ring count, rounds played, etc. It is maintained by the game in the same folder as the rest of the Ricochet files. If your hard drive crashes or that file gets corrupted or deleted, you'll have to start over. It is for that reason that players are STRONGLY encouraged to copy that file periodically to another location for safekeeping. I copy mine to a flash drive and then to my notebook computer every week.

Thanks Big Mama. It will be good to have all this info in one place.
I just learned that the stats.dat file is not always called that on every computer.
On mine it just says stats.
I was very confused for awhile there.

If you only see stats it is because your computer is set up to only show the first part of the filename - the full name is always stats.dat.

The location of my stats.dat file has changed mysteriously.

It used to be in:
c:\Program Files (x86)\Ricochet - Infinity\

But now it has changed to:
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Ricochet - Infinity\

The first location still holds a stats.dat file, but only the second location has a stats.dat file that is updated.

It is important that you locate the correct stats.dat file for backup purposes (check the date and time after having played at least one round).

Now I understand why levelsets don't appear as files in the Rounds folder until you share it... it stores everything in a far away folder?
That solves my problems then. :D
